What Are You Passionate About?

From my experience, I have come to know many people who know what they do not like, however, not many people know what they like and what really drives them in life. There are a lot of people who work with a lack of passion or have values that clash with their job scope. This results in a lot of unhappy people.

The question then is “How do you know what you are passionate about?”

Here are some questions that will help you:

  1. What are the three words that describe you?
  2. What are the things that you really like to do, without getting paid, for long hours?
  3. What are the three things in life that makes you frustrated?
  4. What are some talents that people say you have?
  5. What is your perfect world like?

I truly believe that when you are able to answer the above questions truthfully, your next step is to identify whether there are links between each question and attempt to put them together. Here’s my personal mission statement:

My life purpose is to teach and inspire people to have fun, loving and supportive relationships.

When I see people enjoying their relationships and having fun in the work environment or at home, it gives me tremendous pleasure! This is one of the reasons why I conduct many transformational teambuilding and people related programs. In addition, I give key note address in seminars and conduct talks as well in the people management area. Do not fall into the trap and pursue other peoples’ dreams. I have seen many people trying to enroll themselves in different programs when it is not in line with their personal values and mission.

So, I hope that you will make a conscious decision to identify what you are passionate about and go for it, rather than go through life talking about the things that you don’t like to do.

What’s your passion? Do share it with me in the comments box!

The One Decision That Changed My Life

When I first started in my training business, did you know that I actually worked for other training organisations for just $30/hr? This was rather pathetic, because I only worked for 2 hours day, and most of the time, just 2 days a week. This meant that I only earned approximately $480/month.

This was extremely bad because I had to dig into my savings every month to pay for the bills, housing loan and even food for myself. For four nights in a row, I could not sleep well at all and my wife asked me if I was stressed by what I was doing (I couldn’t admit it and I said NO). Things became very bad till the extent where I could remember that I was left with just $22 in my bank account. This left me very dissatisfied with the results that I am having.

After so much pain and frustration, I made a firm decision. I believed it was a compelling moment where I said ENOUGH WAS ENOUGH! I made a firm decision that I will NOT BE POOR, but will be one of the BEST trainers in Singapore. I will grow from strength to strength in training in the things that I strongly believe in and earn money from it. I must admit that it was only this strong sense of disturbance within the soul that when you make a FIRM DECISION and take Massive Action, it will change your life!

Fast forward many years: I have found a lot of success in training; teaching people what I am passionate about, influencing them to make changes and being paid well for it (what a dream job). All this happened because out of the moment of desperation, I made a FIRM DECISION. I am well paid currently in what I do and derive tremendous amount of satisfaction from my transformational work.

The reason I am sharing about this personal story is to ask you if you ever had a burning desire to do something but yet met with tremendous obstacles that faced your way, or were you ever been plagued by thousands of reasons why you will fail in a task, my encouragement to you is this: MAKE A FIRM DECISION AND TAKE MASSIVE ACTION.

Conclusion:

A Radical Change only happens when a person becomes extremely frustrated and makes a FIRM DECISION to do whatever it takes to overcome the situation. This change will be lasting because it causes a person to be an Overcomer!  Remember, everything starts with a Decision. What is your decision today?

Recently I just came back from an 8 day trip in China. It was exciting being able to train them in teambuilding, self leadership and DISC personality Profiling. Here are some personal insights on the Chinese people that made me sit up and think about why we should not be slack and complacent in our work.

1.    They are hungry for knowledge

I was particularly impressed by their dedication to be able to sit still for hours and just listen to you speak. They will also spend time after the session to clarify their questions. Some were not just learning, they were synthesizing the information to see how they can apply it into other parts of their lives!

2.    They work harder than you or me

Imagine a university student being paid just RMB 1000-1500 a month! (That is equivalent to SGD 212-320 or USD 146-219). They are willing to work at least 12 hours a day without complaining! This sometimes includes even the harshest conditions (eg, not having proper sanitation, dirty and dusty work environments).

3.    They are aggressive and will get what they want

Despite the high unemployment rate in China due to the recent bleak economic conditions  (according to government statistics, about 30 million workers lost their jobs), I can still see people walking into factories and asking for jobs, being willing to do anything they can put their hands to.

4.    They are extremely resilient

Tough times have called for tough measures. Everyone is assigned duties to cook and the meals that they prepare are relatively simple. I saw how they have communal livings where they can survive on bread, vegetables and a little bit of meat. The amount of meat they eat in a week is the same as how much we eat in 2 days!

Conclusion

As a Singaporean, I know that we have our pride and work ethics that we hold on to, but we must always be mindful that we are not competing in Singapore, but against the world economies that are moving rapidly and becoming increasing competitive.
